I founded FA Surveyors in 2017 in response to continued positive feedback from clients I had served over the years. It is this feedback together with the professional pride and satisfaction taken in achieving consistently good results for our clients that will remain the core aim of the business day to day.
My working career started as a software Engineer, back in 1984. I worked for several large IT companies e.g. Logica space and defence, BAE Systems, Thomson Marconi Sonar and Racal Avionics. My work involved designing, coding and testing real time safety critical fly-by-wire flight control Software for military aircrafts such as AMX, Tornado, Eurofighter; Merlin, Lynx and Sea King Helicopters. My most auspicious project was working as a team leader on the Cassini/Huygens project for ESA and NASA. Cassini was a spacecraft built by NASA and Huygens was a probe built by ESA which was transported to Saturn by Cassini and designed to land on the moon Titan. Launch date was 1997 and rendezvous with Saturn was in 2004. My claim to fame is that there is a probe sitting on the surface of Titan with my code on it.
Having had a successful and rewarding career as a software engineer for 20 years, I felt like a change and a new challenge. In 2003 I left my software engineering career behind me, went back to university full time and in 2004 graduated with an MSc in building surveying and started a new career as a Building Surveyor. My first job was with Lawson Queay Chartered surveyors, a renowned and successful practice based in the south east. During my time with them I became chartered and honed my skills and experience in many professional aspects of building surveying, i.e. writing Feasibility reports, Specifications, Employers Requirements and tender documents; acting as a Contract Administrator, Employer’s Agent and CDM Principal Designer; undertaking building inspections, building pathology, building surveys, measurement surveys, condition surveys, feasibility reports and dealing with party wall matters. I worked on various refurbishments and new build projects for dozens of Housing Associations and Local Authorities in the south east.
In 2017 I decided the industry was missing professional, experienced, dedicated surveyors who sincerely cared about the service provided and the need to be conscientious, responsive, flexible and empathetic when dealing with clients.
As a small business, at FA surveyors we care about your project as much as you do, and the advice you will get will always be qualitative and practical, all with a personal touch. We take professional pride and satisfaction in achieving consistently good results for our clients that will remain the core aim of the business and is evidenced in our Google reviews.
At work I am passionate about the built environment, however outside work my passion lies in the natural environment. I am a member of several local wildlife groups, a group scout leader and a STEM ambassador. My interest and knowledge of the natural environment allows FA Surveyors to provide bespoke information in our tailored Level 3 reports, i.e. Japanese knotweed, pests etc; something which other building surveying companies cannot provide.
With an interest in the Natural environment, any negative impact on it, is of course a concern. One area where we can make a difference is to strive for a cleaner environment which means less waste products that could potentially harm humans and wildlife when released into the environment. This can reduce illnesses and improving general public health and wellbeing.
Protecting our environment is not just about looking after ourselves but also the future generations who will inherit this planet from us. While we may use up much of our natural resources today for personal gain or convenience like fossil fuels for energy consumption or single-use plastics for convenience items — safeguarding the earth from these activities now will benefit those who come after us too by ensuring there’s something left for them to enjoy years down the line. This sense of stewardship is essential if we want to leave behind a healthy planet for future generations.
Companies are now more aware of their carbon footprint and strive to be sustainable; and here at FA Surveyors, I feel we are trying to do our little bit and we have achieved a 97% paper free office environment. Let's not forget that...
